SAFETY training
We feel the key to providing a
safe workplace is training. Training for our staff starts with
what we feel are the basics. First aid training is mandatory
for all of our staff; this allows them to deal with minor
emergencies not only at work but at home for their families
and at play on their off time. Our journeyman picker operators
are certified under the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry
Training Act which is a one year (1000 hours and one week home
study and four weeks at N.A.I.T.) program. All new drivers are
required to do a load securement test to insure a basic
knowledge of securing loads. We also do in house training for
TDG and WHIMS, so dependent on what we haul, our drivers will
know how to deal with their load during the trip and storing
the product accordingly. Also, forklift training is available
to all drivers because this is necessary to be able to both
load and unload their trucks in a safe timely manner for our
customers.
What we don’t train in house we
contract out such as H2S alive, fire extinguisher training and
first aid. Since the new OH & S Regulations
(
download-2.5meg pdf file from government site) have come in to
effect we have received numerous requests from many companies
that we work with for both general and site specific safety
orientations. This is not new for us, for example Shell
Jumping Pound Gas Plant has done this with us for many years.
On an annual bases Shell will come and present an orientation
on safety protocol for that specific site. Since 1997 Chariot
Express has had an in house safety coordinator, but, at that
time safety was not a full time job, that is no longer the
case. We now have a full time safety coordinator that only
focuses on safety. Our safety coordinator has been trained in;
- TDG as a trainer
- WHMIS as a trainer
- Hazardous Waste Management
- Leadership for Safety Excellence
- Principles of Health and Safety Management
- Back Injury Prevention Program
- Construction Safety Training System
- Supervisor Training In Accident Reduction Techniques
- Legislation Awareness Program
- Confined Space Awareness
- Substance Abuse Prevention
- Basic Instructional Techniques
- Civil Engineering Technology
Our Safety coordinator is also a Certified Peer Auditor through
ACSA which enables him to not only do
annual in house safety audits he also does safety audits for
other companies in the construction industry.
Chariot
Express has been and will continue to be leaders in our industry
in the ongoing development of our workplace health and safety
management system. As new laws and regulations come in to
place Chariot Express will continue to meet or exceed these
new standards through training, awareness, and implementation
of new programs and policies.
